Dieting Myth: Fat Loss Is Influenced by Calorie Types
Posted by Stephen Bartlay under weight lossNo Comments
Have you come across information on the Internet talking about “types of calories?”
I’ve seen articles claiming that “there are three types of calories: carbohydrates, protein and fat.” I”ve seen articles focused on “the types of calories to eat when gaining weight” or discussing “why calorie type makes a difference.”
These writers are seriously misinformed!
Calories are not things. You can”t see them and you certainly can’t eat them! What is a calorie then” It is the energy required to raise the temperature of a gram of water 1 degree Centigrade.
Since calories measure energy, talking about types of calories is as senseless as taking about types of inches, or types of pounds.
While we can”t talk about types of calories, we can talk about “how many calories.” Each type of food contains a different amount of energy. And you burn different amounts of energy when you do different activities.
In either case, we would talk about these energy amounts in terms of calories.
So different foods can have their calories packed in “tighter.” It takes just a handful of coal to equal the same weight as a big bag of feathers. It is a similar kind of thing when you compare a small piece of cheesecake to a pile of celery.
This fact lays the foundation for some diets and it is also the basis for long term weight control. The feeling we have when we feel “satisfied” after eating is actually quite complex – too complex for us to go into here.
But we can note that one of the factors that go into feeling “satisfied” is the volume of food we have eaten. Clearly if we can eat more food while taking in fewer calories, we are more likely to feel satisfied while at the same time, be less likely to gain weight.
So, the idea the there are types of calories is a myth. The truth is that various foods have different densities of calories.
And the game for the person wanting to lose weight is to eat fewer calories per day than they burn in doing their daily tasks.
